Child Safety & Safeguarding
Creating a Safe, Secure and Respectful Learning Environment
At Dominis, the safety, wellbeing and protection of every child is a priority. Every student should be able to learn where they feel safe, respected and supported, online or in-centre.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and all staff working with students are expected to follow Dominis safeguarding procedures.
Our safeguarding approach
- Safer Recruitment
- Staff Training
- Professional Boundaries
- Secure Communication
- Online Safety
- Child Protection Procedures
- Clear Reporting
01Our Safeguarding Commitment
Dominis is committed to
- Protecting children from harm
- Providing a safe learning environment
- Taking safeguarding concerns seriously
- Maintaining professional tutor–student boundaries
- Using appropriate recruitment and suitability checks
- Protecting students during online tuition
- Keeping student information appropriately protected
- Reporting and escalating safeguarding concerns when required
Our procedures are informed by current Department for Education safeguarding guidance for tuition and other out-of-school settings in England.
02Safeguarding Guidance
Dominis reviews its safeguarding arrangements with reference to relevant UK guidance, including:
- Department for Education – After-school clubs, community activities and tuition: safeguarding guidance for providers
- Working Together to Safeguard Children
- Keeping Children Safe in Education, where relevant as safeguarding best practice
- Applicable Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) guidance
The current DfE guidance is specifically intended for organisations and individuals providing private tuition and other out-of-school activities.
03Staff Responsibilities
All tutors and staff working with students are expected to
- Follow the Dominis Staff Code of Conduct
- Complete relevant safeguarding training
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
- Remain alert to possible safeguarding concerns
- Report concerns promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
- Follow Dominis child-protection procedures
- Use approved communication channels
- Treat students with dignity and respect
Staff should never assume that another person will report a safeguarding concern.
04Safer Recruitment & DBS Checks
Dominis takes appropriate steps to assess the suitability of individuals working with children.
Depending on the role, recruitment procedures may include
- Identity Checks
- References
- Qualification Checks
- Right-to-Work Checks
- Appropriate DBS Checks
- Safeguarding Training
The level of DBS check depends on the role and its eligibility under current DBS requirements.
The DfE advises tuition providers to use a range of suitability checks, because no single check alone establishes whether someone is suitable to work with children.
05Child Protection Procedures
If a tutor or member of staff becomes concerned about a child’s safety or wellbeing, the concern should be reported promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Where a child shares information that may indicate a safeguarding concern, staff should
- Listen carefully
- Take the concern seriously
- Avoid promising complete confidentiality
- Record the relevant information
- Report it promptly
Staff should not conduct their own investigation.
Where necessary, the safeguarding lead will determine whether the concern should be referred to the appropriate safeguarding or statutory service.
06Online Lesson Safety
Safeguarding applies equally to online tuition. Dominis expects online lessons to take place through approved platforms and communication channels.
Students should
- Join using their registered name
- Keep session links private
- Follow classroom behaviour expectations
- Avoid sharing personal information
- Report inappropriate behaviour or communication
Tutors must maintain professional conduct during all online sessions.
Current DfE guidance recognises that safeguarding risks can occur online as well as face to face, and expects tuition providers to have procedures for online safety.
07Communication Between Tutors & Students
All tutor–student communication must remain professional and related to learning. Tutors and students should use only Dominis-approved communication channels.
Personal contact details and private social-media accounts should not be exchanged between tutors and students.
Where communication relating to lessons is required, appropriate Dominis or parent-supported channels should be used.
08Lesson Recording
Where Dominis records an online lesson for safeguarding, quality assurance or academic purposes, students and parents should be informed through the applicable programme terms.
Recordings must remain securely controlled and must not be
- Copied
- Shared
- Published
- Distributed
…without appropriate authorisation.
Where a safeguarding concern is raised, an authorised recording may be reviewed as part of the appropriate internal process.
09Concerns About a Tutor or Member of Staff
Any allegation or safeguarding concern involving a tutor, employee or other adult working with students must be reported promptly.
Dominis will follow its safeguarding procedures and, where required, refer the matter to the appropriate external safeguarding authority.
Concerns are taken seriously regardless of the position or seniority of the individual involved.
10Child-on-Child Concerns
Safeguarding concerns can also arise between students.
Dominis does not accept
- Bullying
- Cyberbullying
- Harassment
- Threatening Behaviour
- Discriminatory Behaviour
- Inappropriate or Abusive Conduct
Students should report behaviour that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
11Reporting a Safeguarding Concern
Parents, students or staff who have a safeguarding concern connected with Dominis should contact the safeguarding team.
If a child is in immediate danger or requires urgent protection, the appropriate emergency or statutory safeguarding service should be contacted without delay.
